Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, said to have been written in three days, opens with sparkling energy, exuberant fanfares, and jubilant tone. James Willshire then joins us for Grieg’s beloved piano concerto, with its striking drama, poetic beauty, virtuosic brilliance and deeply expressive nordic lyricism. After the interval, the orchestra expands into the lush emotional world of Rachmaninov’s second symphony, a masterpiece of soaring melodies and rich orchestral colour, bringing the evening to a powerful and deeply moving close.
