In a tribute to the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, this concert is devoted to one of the most monumental works in the orchestral repertoire: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. From its opening murmurs of tension and anticipation, the symphony builds an epic journey through struggle, reflection, and ultimate transcendence. The vast emotional landscape of the work culminates in the revolutionary final movement, where voices and orchestra unite in the setting of “Ode to Joy,” a powerful expression of universal brotherhood and hope. As both a musical and human statement, Beethoven’s Ninth stands as a timeless celebration of resilience, unity, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
There will be a second performance of this programme the following week at Gloucester Cathedral.

Giuseppe Verdi – La Forza del Destino
Richard Strauss – Der Rosenkavalier Suite
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5
This evening’s concert traces a journey through fate, romance, and triumphant destiny, uniting three masterpieces of orchestral storytelling. Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino Overture opens with dramatic urgency and darkly propulsive energy, foreshadowing the opera’s themes of inescapable fate. The mood then turns to elegance and bittersweet nostalgia in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Suite, where lush waltzes and radiant orchestration capture both youthful love and the passage of time. After the interval, the emotional arc culminates in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a work that moves from brooding introspection to hard-won triumph, binding the evening together in a powerful statement of struggle, fate, and ultimate affirmation.
