Our next concert begins in a spirit of outward festivity and celebration with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, a vibrant, joy-filled curtain-raiser bursting with festive energy and Bohemian flair. As the laughter fades, we are drawn into the profound emotional landscape of Mahler’s fifth symphony. From the solemn opening trumpet call to the radiant finale, this symphony is a journey through grief, love, introspection, and triumph. At its heart lies the immediately recognisable, and intimate Adagietto, a wordless love letter to Mahler’s wife Alma, offering a moment of pure, suspended beauty. Together, these works trace a path from exuberance to the deepest expressions of the human soul.
